Blurb:

I fell in love by accident.

I barely knew Julius Samson.
He was the king of the school. I was the queen of the nerds.
We were star-crossed from the beginning.
Still, he held my hand.
Took me in.
Made me feel safe.
He became my sanctuary.
I never wanted to leave his side.
If I could've stayed forever, I would have.
But we could never be.
Because my future depended on ruining his.

Inspired by Megera (Meg) from the story of Hercules, The Golden Boy is a poignant, emotional, young adult contemporary romance about a teen girl's hard choices, loss, and love.

St. Mary's Academy is a young adult contemporary romance series that brings classic fairytale characters to life in a modern day, high school setting. It's filled with angsty heroines, hot heroes, and drama galore. St. Mary's Academy Shorts are shorter stories from within the St. Mary's Academy universe.

Prologue

I was late.
The Winter Formal started two hours ago, and I was late.
Breathless, I jumped in my car, a red Maserati dad bought me last Christmas, and sped through the moonlit streets of New York City, anxious to be the princess of the ball tonight.
Heat from the vents wrapped my toes in warmth while Freedom ‘90 by George Michael blared through the stereo. I bobbed my head and screamed the lyrics to my windshield.
“There's something deep inside of me. There's someone else I've got to be.”
The words curled and whispered through every part of me, settling in the deepest creases of my soul.  That’s how I felt these days. Like there was something else I was supposed to be doing.
Someone else I was supposed to be.
Someone fun and exciting. A girl who lived her dreams.
I would be that girl tonight. This dance was going to change everything.
I parked the car three blocks away from the school. Heels in hand, and flats firmly on my feet, I pushed the button on my car keys and listened to the alarm chirp on.
One could never be too careful in New York.
I’d just taken my first steps into the street when my phone chimed with an incoming text message.

Bella: Where are you?

Bella and I had been friends since I moved here Freshman year. She was the type of friend who would form a search party if I didn’t answer a text within an hour.  It was nice to have a friend who didn’t allow you to just disappear, even if that friend sometimes disappeared herself.
I tapped in the message box, ready to tell her I was on my way, when, suddenly, a cavalcade of horns blared in my ears, making them ring.
Lights blinded me.
My entire body froze in horror as I watched a yellow taxicab barrel towards me.
Time slowed down.
My life flashed before my eyes.
My dad’s graying beard.
Mom’s red lipstick.
Aunt Chi smoking Marlborough cigarettes.
My brothers pulling my hair.
Bella.
Ariel.
My life was about to go away before I’d had a chance to really live it.
The smell of burning tires filled my nose.
An engine gunned.
All the things I’d never done rose into my mind, mocking me.
I’d never graduate high school.
I’d never kissed a boy.
I’d never be a famous painter.
I’d never be… anything.
I closed my eyes, preparing for the impact, when, suddenly, something, or rather someone, scooped me up and tossed me on the air.
Tires slammed to a stop.
Someone swore.
The smell of hot asphalt and smoke assaulted me.
And then, my hip connected with the concrete, and my body rolled twice along the hard ground before finally sliding to a stop.
What the heck was that?
